For more than 30 years, across the country only a fifth of those taking A-level physics have been girls. Although we have a high take up of girls choosing to take Physics at A-level at Belmont, we are participating in a new project to engage more students with the opportunities that come from studying physics at A-level. The Improving Gender Balance project is a national research trial involving over 160 schools and is funded by the Department for Education and led by the Institute of Physics (IOP). We will be working closely with an IOP coach, Lyndsey Britton-Lee, to explore and then break down the barriers that exist for some students when it comes to choosing subjects at A-level.
