Facilities:
6 rooms within the school are used to teach English to the students.
Key Stage 3:
Students study English for 3 x 1 hour lessons per week with their English teacher during years 7 to 9. All students follow the same curriculum and all classes complete formal assessments every half term. Students cover a range of topics and texts including:
- Fiction and Non-Fiction Reading and Writing
- Poetry
- Prose
- Drama
All students study a Shakespeare play in preparation for their SATs examinations.
Key Stage 4:
Students study English for 4 x 1 hour lessons per week in year 10 and 3 x 1 hour lessons per week in year 11. All students complete coursework assessments in year 10 and are ready to complete English GCSE in Novemeber of year 11. The remainder of the course is dedicated to English Literature. Topics for coursework include:
- Pre-1914 Prose
- A Media Study
- Shakespeare
- Original Writing
In the examination students are assessed on their reading and writing skills.
Extra Curricular:
The English department run after school sessions to support students completing and redrafting coursework in year 10 and exam preparation in year 11. Regular poetry and writing competitions are advertised within the department.
