Design & Technology

Design & Technology at Belmont School Community Arts College covers the traditional D&T subject areas.  Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing is also and intergrated part of the learning experience.  The specialist rooms are well equipped and staffed by experienced teachers who are dedicated to their specialist subjects.

Key Stage 3:

During Key Stage 3, students study D&T subjects for 2 x 1 hour lessons in years 7 and 9 and 3 x 1 hour lessons in year 8.  All students work in the areas of Resistant Materials, Electronics, Systems and Control, Graphics, Food and Textiles.

The course includes the teaching of focused practical tasks designed to deliver the skills and knowledge required in the subject.  Students' skills and knowledge are tested and further developed by the use of the design and creation of assignments.  These assignments allow the natural abilities of the students to come to the fore and encourage them to be creative both when designing and making products.

Key Stage 4:

Key Stage 4 D&T subjects, in accordance with national guidelines, are optional but students may choose from the following examination courses:

Students receive an average of 2.5 hours per week per subject across the Key Stage.  The D&T department is deservedly proud of their record in Key Stage 4 with GCSE students regularly acheiving some of the best results in County Durham.

Many students choose to continue their D&T subjects when progressing to Sixth Form.

OFSTED inspections complimented the standards reached and the teaching in Design & Technology.  The schemes of assessment and the way they were used to inform students learning were also praised.
