Art
The Art Department at Belmont School is committed to providing all students with a thorough understanding of the principles of Art and Design. We promote awareness and understanding of modern and contemporary arts teaching different techniques and introducing new technology practices. We believe that through Art and Design children lives are enhanced, as they learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures. Students will learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries that enrich their lives.
Staffing
The department comprises two full time members of teaching staff, Ms Lees, as Art coordinator and Mrs Hutchinson classroom Teacher. Ms Lees is Responsible for managerial and curriculum issues.
Extra-curricular Opportunities
The Art and Design department offer lunch-time and after school activities for both Key Stage 3 and 4 students.
Examination Courses
Art & Design: AQA Code 3201 (Full Course)
The department follows the Art & Design (UNENDORSED) Specification offered by AQA. It encourages candidates to develop creative and imaginative powers and the practical skills necessary to communicate ideas, feelings and meanings within the context of art and design. It develops investigative, analytical and critical skills and knowledge and understanding of the history of art, craft and design in our own and other cultures.
The course requires students to produce at least 2 pieces of coursework. The coursework represents 60% of the total marks and is completed during the lessons and as homework.
The remaining 40% of the assessment is given to the response produced in the controlled test. This takes place over 10 hours in the art department. Candidates must respond to one starting point and are allowed a four week preparatory period.

Photography AQA code 3206 (full course)
Candidates will be introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of lens-based and light-based media, techniques and processes, including both traditional and new technologies.
They will explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to lens-based and light-based media from the past and from recent times, including European and non–European examples which will be integral to the investigating and making process. Responses to these examples will be shown through practical and critical activities which demonstrate the candidates’ understanding of different styles, genres and traditions.
Candidates will work in one or more areas of lens-based and light-based media such as those listed below. They may explore overlapping and combinations of areas:
- Natural Forms
- Portraiture
- Landscape photography
- Still Life photography
- Documentary photography
- Abstract photography
- Fine Art photography, photographic installation
- New media practice such as computer manipulated photography and photographic projections.

Key Stage 3
Year 7 students research the work of the artists Henri Rousseau and make works of art from his influence, this includes fist hand observational drawings and painting with there imagination to create new works of art. Students also learn new skills and techniques to make works of art based on the theme of Self Image, where the research the artist Picasso and draw and paint in an abstract and creative style.

In year 8, students look across different time scales and through different culture to study artists who have influenced other artists and art movements. This work evolves into 2 and 3D pieces of finish work.

In year 9 the students are encouraged to explore new technology through computer programs and digital imagery to create new and exciting pieces of art work.
