The Core Offer
By 2010, the Government plans to have all schools delivering ‘The Core Offer’. Split into 5 sections the offer is:
- Wraparound Childcare
- A varied Menu of Activities
- Parenting Support
- Swift and Easy Access
- Community Access
Wraparound Childcare:
This is childcare that is ‘wrapped around’ the school day (before and after school) from 8am until 6pm.
The core offer will ensure year round access to affordable childcare for primary children and access to a range of activities for secondary. The childcare on offer may be provided by the school or by a private or voluntary group. It may be based within the schools themselves or at another venue within the cluster.
If you require information regarding childcare or early years education now, please contact the Children’s Information Service, using the contact numbers at the end of this letter.
A varied menu of activities:
Schools will provide a selection of activities for children such as after school clubs (homework, sports, music, dance, drama and special interest clubs) and breakfast clubs before school. There will also be opportunities for visits to museums or events. Secondary schools will have additional opportunities in volunteering and business enterprise schemes. All activities will depend on demand.
Parenting support:
Schools will hold information sessions for parents, especially at key transition points (e.g. moving from primary to secondary). There will be activities for parents and carers and parenting programmes on offer together with family learning sessions. If our school is not running such events, there will information in school on where these are being held.
Swift and Easy Referral:
There are many different types of support services that children and adults may need to access throughout their school lives. Schools already work closely with health services, behaviour support services and other specialist agencies. This section of the core offer just increases the range of services that can be accessed directly through the school.
Community Access:
All schools have facilities that could, and often already do, benefit their local communities. Where possible, schools will provide access to their sports halls and fields, ICT rooms, playgrounds, classrooms, libraries, assembly halls and dining halls and numerous other facilities and educational resources. As an extended school there will be increased community access into the schools within the cluster. Again, if the school is not providing community services we will provide information on where such activities are taking place.
There may be many questions that you still have unanserer relating to the core offer or to the extended Schools agenda.
